Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to buy our coffee and find our cafes, whatever device or assistive technology they use. This page explains where we are with that and how to reach us if something gets in your way.
The standard we work to
We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the guidelines most widely used to judge whether a website is accessible.
What we have done
- Every image carries descriptive alternative text for screen readers.
- Text and background colors are checked against the WCAG contrast minimums, with most well above them.
- The site can be navigated by keyboard alone, with a visible outline showing where you are and a skip link to jump straight to the main content.
- Form fields are labelled, buttons and links describe where they go, and headings run in order so screen readers can move through the page properly.
- Pages are built to work at any window size and to reflow when text is enlarged.
Where we fall short
Accessibility is ongoing rather than finished, and we would rather be straight about that than claim otherwise.
- Some older journal posts from earlier years have images and formatting that predate this work.
- Our checkout and account pages are provided by Shopify, so parts of them are outside our direct control. We do report problems to them.
- We have not had the site formally audited by a third party.
If something is in your way
Tell us and we will fix it. It helps if you can say which page you were on and what happened, but reach out either way and we will work it out.
We read every message and will reply. If a barrier is stopping you from completing an order, say so and we will take the order directly.
Our cafes
This page covers the website. For questions about getting into or around any of our cafes, please contact us and we will tell you what to expect at that location.
