Drink Coffee, Live Longer? Coffee Research FTW

We always enjoy an article to help confirm our coffee biases, so here's the latest if you haven't seen it.

A recent study in the European Heart Journal (PMID: 39776171) suggests that drinking coffee in the morning may be linked to a longer life. Researchers found that morning coffee drinkers had a 12% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality over a 10-year period. However, these benefits were not observed for coffee consumed later in the day.

Optimal Coffee Intake for Longevity

The study found that moderate to high morning coffee consumption provided the greatest benefits:

  • 1–2 cups/day16% lower risk of all-cause mortality

  • 2–3 cups/day28% lower risk of all-cause mortality

  • 3+ cups/day21% lower risk of all-cause mortality

Why Timing Matters

While the study doesn’t establish causation, possible explanations may include:

  • Circadian alignment: Morning coffee may work better with the body's natural rhythm.

  • Lifestyle factors: Morning coffee drinkers might have healthier routines.

  • Coffee’s polyphenols: Antioxidants in coffee could have time-dependent effects.

Key Takeaway

If you already enjoy morning coffee, this research suggests it may have additional health benefits to just the joy we get from it.

So cheers to our favorite new reason for drinking more coffee!
